[Leasehold House] A Home Embraced by Sea and Valley Breezes

You might be wondering—where is this place?

All you can hear is the gentle murmur of a stream. This spot is actually just behind the house we’re introducing today.

Even though it’s not technically part of the property, having such a peaceful stream view is truly special.
They say kingfishers frequent the area, and in June, you can even see fireflies.

Across the stream, lush greenery spreads out, and there’s no one around to interrupt the view.

This is Inamuragasaki.

While Inamuragasaki is famous as a seaside town, if you venture into the depths of its valleys, you’ll find places where nature still thrives.

Today, we’re guiding you from one of those hidden backroads of Kamakura.

These scenic views have been preserved thanks to the people who have lovingly cared for and lived in this area for generations.
If there’s one place in Kamakura where the word “local” truly fits, it might just be Inamuragasaki.

At the end of this charming little road is the home we’re showcasing today.

It’s a two-family style house with a wooden main building and an annex that feels almost joined together.
The structure offers flexible living options depending on who lives there.

It was built by Kirakuna Tatemono-ya, a rare architectural firm in Kamakura, located in Tebiro, that uses traditional Japanese construction methods.

Even the roof tiles were fired by a dedicated tile kiln.
Each and every building material has been chosen with such care that we could go on talking about it endlessly.

There are many types of traditional Japanese construction, but this house features authentic walls made of bamboo and earth.

When built with natural materials like these, a house only gets better with age—
the weathering of the materials blends it beautifully with the environment, making time something to look forward to.

The entrance, too, feels like an organic extension of its surroundings.

There’s a saying in Japan: “Design a house with summer in mind.”
And this house embodies that idea. The earthen walls don’t just regulate humidity—they also lend a visually cool atmosphere.

But it’s not just the quality materials.
With thoughtful design, the sunlight, breeze, and views elevate everyday life into something more comfortable and fulfilling.

Believe it or not, this house doesn’t have air conditioning.
And yet, the natural breezes that pass through and the roof tiles that block heat keep the interior cool and pleasant.

Usually, we don’t see much of a home’s structure while living in it,
but here, the pillars, beams, and ceilings are all left visible.
The thickness and joinery of the wooden beams provide a reassuring sense of strength—
yet there’s also a graceful flexibility unique to timber construction.

That’s the beauty of working with an architectural firm—you get a home you can shape and enjoy as you live in it.

The house is surrounded by yato (small valleys), but it’s not too close to the mountains, so moisture doesn’t accumulate.
And being next to a stream that channels breezes from both the valley and the sea, you can really feel nature’s coolness.

Just look how open it is—even the bathroom is designed like this.

There are windows even in the water areas, letting in plenty of light and fresh air.
Every corner reflects the thought and care of both the architect and the owner.

This is the living room and bedroom in the annex.
The layout, with rooms divided into four sections, makes for an easy and practical flow of daily life.

By the way, the current owner raises a lot of medaka (Japanese rice fish),
but they won’t be able to take all of them to their new home.
If you’re interested in keeping medaka, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

A home is made not just from its building or surroundings,
but also by the people who live there.

This is a house where you can feel time passing gently,
and live a life filled with peace.

If you’re interested, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
